HEROs Open Day in February was a resounding success with over forty people (Including two competitors from the Continent) visiting Gaydon to talk to the officials, scrutineers and navigators who gave up their time to help. Peter would like to offer particular thanks to Tony Davies, Peter Elliott, Lynn Nedin, and John & Harriet Wood.
The aim of the day was to provide an informal drop-in session for anyone who wanted to learn about regularity rallies (not just HERO events), for those who wanted to talk to a scrutineer or for novices who had questions on basic navigation but who may have felt a little self conscious asking questions at the start of an event.
No-one was subjected to a hard sell, and everyones questions were treated as being of the utmost importance. Those who attended included experienced crews and total novices (some having just done one or two events and others who had never competed). No-one left without having gained something and everyone commented on how useful the session had been. Some people stayed for most of the day enjoying free access to the museum that was a bonus gained by attending the Open Day.
Our senior scrutineer Peter Elliott was kept occupied looking at cars brought along by potential competitors and those who attended had the opportunity to examine road & map books, and competitor instructions as provided on events such as LE JOG and the Scottish Malts. Navigation aids were also on display to allow complete novices the chance to examine and ask questions about the numerous trip meters available.
Plans are already in hand to run a similar session in 2009, whilst the LE JOG training day will be held this October as usual
