2 Programme (Regulations, Article 2) The current programme of the event is attached. You will see that we have been able to return to our original programme starting and finishing in Edinburgh, and using CalMac ferries in order to hop from Skye to the mainland and then onto Mull. The programme is subject to refinement as the event approaches, and as the threat of Foot and Mouth Disease retreats.

3 Entries (Article 10) A Team Entry Form is attached. Please use this if you have not already entered a team on your individual Entry Form. We hope all competitors will wish to join or form teams of three cars, as follows:

  1. Marque Team: please contact other drivers of the same make and ideally same model of car, to form a one-make team
  2. National Team: if there are three or more other crews of your nationality or permanently resident in your country, please contact them to form a National Team. This applies to English, Scottish, Welsh and Irish crews, as well as others.
  3. Club or ecurie team: if there are entrants from your club, or a group of your friends, why not form a club or ecurie team? You may invent your own ecurie name for this purpose.

You may be in one team of each type. To enter a team, please return a completed Team Entry Form along with the appropriate fee to the HERO office. If you are not in teams by the time of Documentation, we will try and link you up with other crews to form one. A list of telephone numbers of the other drivers is attached, to help you contact them.

4 Maps (Article 12) The only map definitely required by competitors will be the Ordnance Survey Motoring Atlas of Britain, 2001 edition. For those who wish to follow the route in more detail, a list of the OS 1:50,000 Landranger maps which cover the route will be issued with the next Bulletin. Our official map supplier is: Rallymaps, The Gate Lodge, 107 Sydenham Ave, Belfast, BT4 2DP, tel (+44/0) 2890 808808, fax (+44/0) 2890 808809. Atlases and maps may be ordered from them at a good discount.

Rallymaps are also able to supply a fully marked up Map Book of the route containing full route details, including major controls, tests and regularity routes, although not the location of the intermediate regularity timing points and secret checks. For each overnight halt, a detailed street map will be included showing event hotel locations. This map book is thoroughly recommended by the organisers, but it is not an official rally document and does not contain formal instructions or information. The order form for this will also be with the next Bulletin.

5 Maximum Permitted Lateness (Article 15) The Maximum Permitted Lateness at Major Controls other than the Start and Restart Controls for each Age Category is as follows: Age Categories A and B, 1 hour; Age Category C, 45 minutes; Age Categories D, E and F, 30 minutes. At the Start and Restart Controls at the beginning of each day it is 15 minutes for everyone.

6 Regularity Sections (Article 17) When stopping at a Timing Point, you will NOT receive a card from the marshal showing your time of arrival. Instead, you must hand their Time Card to the marshal so he can record this time.

7 Charity Shield (Article 22) This important trophy is awarded to the competitor raising the largest sum for one or more recognised charities, in connection with their entry. All money raised must go to the charity or charities concerned; competitors may not retain any proportion to cover their own costs. Please make an effort - competitors in LE JOG, Classic Malts and other HERO events have raised over £240,000 since 1993. The relevant form is attached.

8 Insurance (Article 24) It is compulsory for all competitors to carry third party insurance valid for the event and for at least two members of the crew. Please note that there are two possibilities for this :

(a) You can arrange for your own insurance for the rally. In this case

  1. you must verify with your insurance company that your policy covers your participation in a timed motor rally
  2. this must cover at least two members of the crew to drive the car
  3. you will have to sign a declaration at Documentation that you are covered by insurance as required in this article

(b) Alternatively, you can be covered by the Bradstock Scheme. This provides third party only insurance cover to participants, at a basic rate of £15 per car. Here is the procedure :

  1. If you comply with the Bradstock Declaration as shown in the Regulations, all you need do is sign this declaration at Documentation and pay the relevant fee.
  2. If you are in any doubt whether you comply with the declaration, you should contact Bradstock Insurance Brokers directly on tel (+44/0) 161-228 0721 or (+44/0) 161-236 7371, fax (+44/0) 161-236 0995 before Friday 31st August 2001.

9 Novices Briefing During the afternoon of Saturday 15 September, we will be running a Novices Briefing. This will consist of a classroom-style briefing by experienced competitors and an optional practice run around the area. It will be based at the Scrutineering and Documentation location of Glenkinchie Distillery where refreshments will also be available throughout the day. This will take the place of the event that was originally planned for 19 August as it will be much easier for all to attend and the lessons learnt will be fresher in the mind.

10 Alcohol No member of a competing crew may, on any day during the running of the event, consume alcohol of any kind prior to completing that day’s run, nor drive a vehicle of any kind after consuming alcohol. The penalty for this is IMMEDIATE EXCLUSION.

11 Queries At Documentation, you will be issued with a number of Query Forms. Please use these to raise queries with the organisers, who will respond via the Official Notice Board which will be on show at all Rally HQ locations. If you are not happy with this response, you have the right to appeal to the Clerk of the Course so long as your protest is accompanied by a £20 fee which will be returned if your protest is upheld. If you are still not happy with the situation, you may appeal to the Stewards of the Meeting, however this appeal must be accompanied by an appeal fee of £150. The atmosphere of the event is such that protesting is against the spirit of the event. We believe that all queries can and will be solved amicably.

12 Official Photographer The Official Press Photographer is Mike Johnson. The Official Competitor Photographer is Tom Coffield Sr, of Roo-Nia, Crianlarich, FK20 8RO, Scotland, tel/fax 01838 300273. He will be taking pictures throughout the event, and will have contact sheets for viewing at prizegiving, where orders can be placed.

13 Ferries In conjunction with the organisers, Allsports Logistics are offering special deals on ferries from continental Europe and Ireland. We include a Ferry Information and Booking Form for all crews resident overseas. If anyone else would like to take advantage of these offers, please contact the HERO office for a form. These forms should be returned directly to Allsports Logistics, and not to the HERO office.

14 Press Information It would help our Press Officer if you will complete and return the information sheet about your crew and car with as many intersting facts as possible. Please return this soon so that we can get the press machine running

That’s all for now. If you have any further questions about the event, please do not hesitaste to contact the HERO office.
