Welcome to the Scottish Malts Classic Car Tour

Over the last four years, "The Malts" has built up a great reputation as a very enjoyable historic regularity rally, offering an excellent and mildly competitive event to hundreds of satisfied customers. However, it is undoubtedly a fairly tough test of older and more fragile cars.

We have more than once been asked if we could create a touring event, to run in parallel with the Reliability Trial, which would share its great social atmosphere, pass through similar stunning scenery and visit many of the same places, but without putting the deamnds of competition on the crew or the car.

For 2003, we have decided to do just that. If you've always fancied a superb trip round Scotland, in congenial company, in a car that is too precious or fragile for a tougher challenge, this is for you!

Preliminary Regulations

as at 3rd October 2002

1. Announcement. The first Scottish Malts Classic Car Tour will be held on 12th to 16th May 2003. It is not a motor sporting competition. It is promoted by HERO - the Historic Endurance Rallying Organisation. Its use of the public highway is authorised under the statutory Motor Vehicles (Competitions and Trials) (Scotland) Regulations 1976 as "an event in which, as respects such part of the event as is held on a public highway, merit attaches to a competitor's performance only in relation to good road behaviour and compliance with the Highway Code".

2. Provisional Programme. This is set out overleaf. It is subject to amendment..

3. Officials. Clerk of the Course, John Brown; Deputy Clerk of the Course, Colin Pagan; Event Secretary, Joanna Brown. Other officials will be nominated.

4. Eligible Participants. Invited crews of two or more, in cars made before 31st December 1979; later cars of particular interest may be accepted at the Clerk of the Course's discretion. No competition licence is necessary. All crew members must be members of HERO - subscription included in entry fee for new members. At least two crew members must be licensed and insured to drive the vehicle entered.

5. Entries. The entry fee for a crew of two is £2,950 until 31 January 2003, and £3,150 after that date. This includes event participation; six nights' bed and breakfast, sharing a twin room; dinners or social events most evenings, including welcome dinner, and farewell evening function; prizegiving champagne breakfast; the Malts Rack, and miniature of whisky at each distillery visited to go in it, for each crew member; other souvenirs and apparel; two rally plates and side number panels; detailed road book; etc. Supplements are payable for extra crew members and for single rooms, as follows:

• single rooms for crew of two (if available): £725 per crew

• additional crew members in single room: £975 each

• third and fourth crew members sharing room: £675 each

The entry list opens on publication of these Regulations and closes on 14th April 2003. The Organisers reserve the right to accept late entries. Participants withdrawing before 31st March will receive a full refund; those doing so after then but before 14th April will receive a 50% refund. After 14th April, the Organisers reserve the right to retain the full entry fee; no refunds will be made to non-starters.

If the event is abandoned or postponed for any reason (including too few entries on the event or on the associated Reliability Trial), at any time, the Organisers reserve the right to retain a proportion of the entry fee to cover administrative costs incurred to that point.

6. Route, Navigation and Driving Behaviour. The full route will be about 850 miles, on good quality roads. Detailed route instructions, requiring minimal navigation skills, will be issued. However, it is not compulsory to follow this route.

Touring notes will also be provided, drawing attention to places of interest along the way and to historic and other attractions close to the route. You are free to visit as many of these as you wish, within the constraints of the general time schedule.

No one crew member may drive for more than 200 miles without rest or relief.

Participants must at all times comply with the requirements of the Road Traffic Acts, and drive in a responsible and considerate manner. Failure to do so may result in an official warning or in exclusion from the event.

7. Checkpoints. There will be Checkpoints at the start and end of each day's run, and at the officially designated lunch halt. Participants' Passage Cards will be stamped at these places.

8. Awards. As this is not a competition, there are no prizes as such, but a Class One souvenir award will be given to each crew visiting every Checkpoint while it is open; and a Class Two award to each car starting every day's run and arriving at the finish.

All crew members will at the start receive a Malts Rack, and a miniature of whisky for this at each distillery visited.

Other awards will be given to the oldest car to complete the route; and the most meritorious participant.

Participants are eligible for the Scottish Malts Charity Shield, given to the crew on either the Reliability Trial or the Classic Car Tour raising the most for charity.

9. Concours d'Elegance. Cars will be judged at the start, during the event and at the finish for originality, level and appropriateness of equipment, crew apparel, attention to period detail and stylishness. Awards will be made to the best cars in different age categories. Marks will not be lost for being travel stained. Only finishers are eligible.

10. Insurance. Participants are responsible for ensuring that they are fully covered by insurance during the event as required by the Road Traffic Acts, and will be required to sign a declaration to this effect. They will also be required to sign a declaration on their Entry Form and Signing On sheet indemnifying the organisers from liability.
