WEDNESDAY 15 SEPTEMBER 2004
A day of superlatives. Wonderful; fantastic; stunning; incredible; amazing; glorious. The list went on as crews described the scenery on arrival at Kylesku. Claudia Riederer, touring in the Healey 3000, commented that every time she had been there, it was always a different visual experience. Today, we all basked in the sunshine while the cumulonimbus hung moodily over Loch Glencoul.
The rally day started at Inverness with participants heading northwards to tackle two distillery tests at Dalmore and Glenmorangie. The latter of these saw the achievement of the day, when the Bottos crew registered a distance of 1cm on the measurement test in their Lancia Fulvia Zagato. Also, at Glenmorangie, Alan and Jamie Harrison found themselves making two visits to the distillery - the first for the test, and the second to return from 20km up the road, to check out at the Main Control one minute before it closed!
The route then returned to a regular Malts favourite, the Littleferry Kart Circuit, for another test in the shadow of the hilltop memorial to the 1st Duke of Sutherland.
The Redaelli's on the Drumbeg loop
The Strathbrora regularity saw a few competitors being caught out by some cunningly placed slots and timing points. Heather Milne-Taylor recalled a Wacky Races-like story involving the Redaelli's in the Aston Martin missing a slot, then roaring past them to catch up, only to miss the next one and having to repeat the exercise.
Onwards, then, to a tremendous lunch at picturesque Kylesku, where tranquillity is only interrupted by frolicking seals, and the odd classic car….. HERO Officials were spotted ordering everything on the menu, as we all revelled in the prospect of a wonderful seafood lunch.
What Lurks Beneath……..and some langoustine!
No major car problems were reported before leaving Kylesku, although Neal Hilton was spotted lurking under the bonnet of his Lotus Cortina, spanner in hand, sorting out a misfire.
The highlight of the afternoon's run back to Inverness was the scenically renowned Drumbeg loop. One of Scotland's finest coastal drives saw crews meandering along the beautiful west coast, through moorland and over mountain, before passing through Ullapool en route to our second night in Inverness.
